The name circled on the heavily creased sheet of paper was “Byron Slovic.” Davis explained, as the two traveled by car to Slovic’s home address, that he had checked with a friend in Records—the attractive young lady Bolan remembered—in order to have the affected records more deeply examined. While his cursory check of the files indicated which data went with which identifier, it could not tell him what might have been removed from the data. There were, however, ways to check the backup files for these discrepancies, and someone in Records whom Davis trusted was the only option. That had been his lady friend.

The information was fortuitous, for they would have been dead in the water otherwise, relegated to checking the list person by person with no real inkling of whether they were getting closer to their goal. Farnham had dropped out of sight. They could not afford to wait for him to kill again. They had no idea what his next step might be, especially if there was a very real reason the man would behave erratically.

Farnham had been true to his word. They had looked up the man’s DMV records and scored a positive identification. Bolan had also contacted the Farm with this data. The results of a deep computer check, however, weren’t helpful. Farnham was almost literally nobody: he wasn’t important enough to rate much in the way of files. He had no reliable job history, no assets, and nothing to tie him to a permanent address. The apartment listed with his driver’s license records had been recently occupied but was currently vacant. Davis had called in a favor and had Detroit PD sweep the apartment. They found nothing.

Farnham’s medical records had proved more interesting. A brief interview with his doctor had turned up a past history of brain cancer that had seemingly gone into remission. Once Bolan flashed his Justice Department credentials, the doctor hesitantly began to divulge more information. He said that Farnham had returned to see him a while ago, complaining of severe headaches. The doctor had given him the dreaded news that the tumor was back, and that perhaps it had never gone away. In response to Bolan’s pressing he had admitted that, yes, such a tumor might affect a man so severely that he became disconnected from reality, to the extent that he committed serial murder. When the doctor had started asking what this was all about, Bolan had been forced to brush him off. He was not going to divulge more details than necessary to gain insight into the mission.

They had issued an urgent bulletin for Patrick Farnham. The man’s identity was being released to all law-enforcement agencies in the area; television news stations were being informed that Farnham was an escaped patient from a drug rehabilitation facility, considered armed and very dangerous. If Farnham showed his face in public again, they might be able to reacquire him. His presence in proximity to the parking garage made him the primary suspect in the murders.
